This week in the pack we expect to have winter squash; parsnips; potatoes; cherry tomatoes; eggplant; peppers; garlic; kale; and a fruit (apples or pears).

On the farm we are seeing many profound changes.  All the interns have now left.  Victoria and Kevin will become customers again, joining Bruce Glass at the Victoria Park pick up.  Marshall is in full swing as a valuable employee, and is considering sticking around for a while because he loves farming so much.  This is seriously good news!  Also Lori seems to be committed to sticking around, which is terrific because she lives nearby and she’s so quick and fun and reliable.  We couldn’t ask for a better foundation for a great field crew.  We will be hiring one more person to manage the more detailed work of greenhouse, seedling, and irrigation management.  Know of anyone?

The other changes include, of course, lower temperatures; leaf colour; more rain; and a serious increase in little loveable slimy creatures, like frogs, toads, and snakes.  Soon the stream of festive fishermen will change over to orange-clad hunters.  One change I love about the fall is that we can smell the life in the soil.  Our soil — ahem — happens to smell very good.

Talking about fishing, there is a terrific video about a local fisherman who has a weir in the Avon River near our farm.  I recommend it highly.  Also, did you hear in the news that the fish operation (Sustainable Blue) at the end of our road is raising and selling inland salmon?  Check out the Chronicle Herald article.  The restaurant near us called the Flying Apron have the salmon on their menu from time to time.
