Gift

Today at lunch, Andrew and Olivia brought their new little baby boy, Parker, to visit with us. Everyone was very touched and fell in love with him immediately. This whole day, and week, has felt somehow blessed. Beautiful weather, good spirits, and a feeling of accomplishment as we wrap up the farm share season. We did have a frost this week, but it was time. I had fewer herbs to harvest, so I joined in with radish, hakurei, cabbage, and black kale harvest. Everyone commented on the slanted light and how everything looked so beautiful this morning as the sun rose.

David was madly shovelling wood chips into the greenhouse pathways in Nina. Kara was in charge of moving field tunnels in middle field. She loves moving field tunnels! There is a lot to do, like unscrewing the cross braces (which has been such a pain in previous years), pulling and moving the ribs to a new location, pulling the rebar out, and then pounding them in in the new location. Then everything has to be re-assembled. Phew!

Everyone is very excited about how crops are coming along for the rest of the fall and winter! They are growing so fast we are already dipping into winter harvest and it’s not winter yet. It has been such a challenging year, weather-wise, but it feels like the last few weeks have been a gift. We will continue on with production, harvest, Market. We will likely have frustrations, crazy storms, tears. But as our late friend Mother Thompson always said, “just keep on keeping on.” That is what we will do.

White russian kale with hakurei turnips. The white russian kale is sweet and tasty. A biscuit with rosemary in it has such flavour! These together with carrot soup made a hearty farm lunch.

We had our year end review on Monday. Eli sent a questionnaire, and compiled a summary of results for us to discuss.
