Rest

At 5:30am, the male yellow-bellied sapsucker thinks we should all be awake as he pounds repeatedly on the metal roof of the wood shed.  As we move towards the solstice on June 21, that time will get earlier.  It is really hard to get solid rest at this time of year, when sunsets are so late and it’s tempting to just keep working until dark, and start the day early because there’s so much to do.  I’ve been told the trick to getting good quality rest, is to do a job and know that it is complete and well done.  In the rush and chaos of spring, it feels hard to have that sense, but it is something to aspire to!

On the positive side, spring is such a gush of beauty and optimism on the farm.  The sounds and smells all feel so fresh and promising (except the sapsucker racket).  The hummingbirds are zooming around and hovering everywhere, exuding joy.

We managed to get through the first week of farmshare without any casualties!  Thanks to everyone who came to pick up their share and contributed to all the positive energy at the Warehouse Market.  Feel free to comment on how it went for you!

Jen B and Thao harvesting. Thao is a dietetics intern and will be developing recipes for using our produce in meal prep. Stay tuned!
Harry Winslet and Georgia Lewis, Nuffield Scholars, visited the farm and we had such a great soil geek out session!

Phacelia is a cover crop we’re trying out. It is good in a rotation because it is not related to any other crops or cover crops. Harry also said it has unique qualities for soil improvement. Stay tuned!

Jen B harvested all day on the farm, and was so excited to get crops immediately on to the shelves at Market when she arrived with the load, and let customers know what she was excited about.
It is so nice to see the display unit at Market full of green produce!
